Women using Social Media
This infographic from Digital Flash NY shows the extent to which women are usinng social media compared to men. Overall women are more active users of social networks. Similar figures have been reported by other studies:
- Women have more friends on social networks
- Women are more active social networkers
- Women more likely to visit a social networking site
Women using Social Media – Gaming
If you consider how women using social media are more active then it is easy to see the how the online gaming market has changed. Traditionally it was dominated by men but how women are a major part of the market. As an example Zynga, who produce some of the main games found on Facebook, found that “women over the age of 55 spend more time playing online games than males aged 15 to 24 and males 25 to 34 combined.”
Although Linkedin and Google+ has a more active users who are men it would be interesting to see which gender creates the most engagement on these platforms.
Women using Social Media – Implications
The implications for marketers are to consider these demographics when they are segmenting and profiling their target audience. However, perhaps the broader implication is to question how the future of social media will evolve and whether men will ultimately participate as actively as men and in equal measure or whether we will see further platforms emerge that are more gender focused. What do you think?
